Your HubSpot renewal went up. What to check before you sign
Short answer: You cannot downgrade or cancel a HubSpot subscription mid-term. A downgrade takes effect on your renewal date and you must raise it with HubSpot at least five business days before that date. If a price increase lands on your renewal quote, the decisions you can control are seat count, hub tier, marketing contact tier and credit settings, and most of them have to be made before the renewal date, not after.
All HubSpot policy details below come from HubSpot’s own knowledge base and product catalogue, linked inline, and were checked on 16 October 2026. HubSpot changes terms and prices, so confirm the current version before you act.
Why the number goes up at renewal
Three things drive most increases, and they are worth separating because they call for different responses.
- List price changes. HubSpot adjusts published prices, and your renewal reflects them.
- Automatic upgrades during the term. Your marketing contact count rising above your tier, or assigning more seats than you purchased, can upgrade you mid-term rather than at renewal. This is one of the most common surprises.
- Credits. AI features bill by credits, and unused credits expire each month. If your account purchased additional credits before 16 September 2026, auto-upgrade is the default when you exceed your limit. Purchases made on or after that date default to pay-as-you-go.
What you can change, and when
| Decision | When it can be made | Where |
|---|---|---|
| Downgrade a hub tier | At renewal only, requested at least five business days before the renewal date | HubSpot representative or support ticket |
| Turn off auto-renewal (cancels at the end of the commitment term) | Any time, effective at the renewal date | Account and Billing, Subscriptions tab |
| Reduce seats | Before the renewal, and before you assign fewer users | Seats settings |
| Reduce your marketing contact tier | Before the renewal; contacts are tiered and counted | Marketing contacts settings |
| Cap monthly credit spend, per account and per tool | Any time | Credit settings |
| Switch credit overage behaviour between auto-upgrade and pay-as-you-go | Any time | Credit settings |
One detail worth knowing: if you have a Professional or Enterprise subscription, a renewal centre appears in your account once an active renewal deal exists, usually 120 to 180 days before the renewal date. It shows the quoted terms. Starter accounts handle changes through support instead.
A checklist to run 60 days before the renewal date
- Export the two lists you need: assigned seats with last activity, and every automation or workflow that touches contacts (its job, its trigger, whether anyone has checked its output recently).
- Price the tier against use. For each hub, list the features your team actually uses weekly. HubSpot’s product and services catalogue shows which tier each feature requires, so you can see what a downgrade would cost you.
- Count seats honestly. Look at the last 90 days of activity. Dormant seats are the easiest saving and the least disruptive.
- Check the contact tier. Marketing contacts are priced separately from contacts in the CRM. If a big import pushed you up a tier, decide whether those records need marketing status at all.
- Set credit limits. Set a monthly maximum for the account and for each tool, so an agent in a workflow cannot spend more than you intended.
- Raise changes at least five business days before the date, in writing, and ask for the change in the renewal quote rather than a verbal assurance.
- Ask what a switch would cost you for real, including the parts people forget: migration, rebuilding workflows, retraining the team and the weeks of lower output while it happens.
Two assumptions that cause expensive mistakes
- “We can just turn off auto-renewal and negotiate later.” Turning it off cancels at the end of the term and you keep paying until then. It is a decision, not a delay tactic.
- “We will clean it up after renewal.” Downgrades take effect at the renewal date, so preparation after the fact postpones the saving by a year.
When switching is the right answer
Sometimes it is. If you are paying for a tier whose features you do not use, your team is working around the tool, or your process needs something HubSpot does not do, another CRM can be the better call. We have seen teams switch and switch back, so we weigh the migration honestly, including what a rebuild costs in weeks rather than dollars.
If you have already signed the renewal
You still have options inside the term: reduce seats, cap credit spend, turn off features that bill per action, and prepare an earlier downgrade request for the next renewal date. Ask for the renewal date in writing so you can put it in the calendar.
